Independence Day 2012

Independence Day 2012

Today marks Malaysia’s 55th Independence Day. To a Malaysian, the words “Malaysia” and “Merdeka” bring special meanings. Compared with other countries, Malaysia is still a fledgling – still a rather young country. The country has seen a lot, however… especially during the last two or three years. Today, it is easy to start thinking – is ANY country really independent? In an age when words like “global”, “worldwide” and “international” are used on an everyday basis, every act that a country contemplates comes with strings attached – a lot of things have to be taken into consideration. Most residents of SS2 refuse to live anywhere else. Have a look and see why… Safety first – the police station at SS2. There’s a bank on most of the streets in SS2. Fancy buying some fruits? This fruit stall is famous for its fresh fruit. A bit pricey, though. The bookstore has been around for years. I remember buying my textbooks here! A music store, an arts and craft store and a pet shop – all right next to each other. One of the neighborhood hardware stores. One of the biggest jewelry stores in SS2. One of the supermarkets in SS2. There’s a florist as well. It’s a small shop, but they have really nice flowers in stock. One of the most famous landmarks in SS2 – the goreng pisang (fried banana fritters) stall. One of the many street food stalls in SS2. They have very nice Malay food… yum! Eating under the trees – still a familiar sight here. You’re a vegetarian? No problem, there’s a restaurant for you…. This street features many food stalls… it’s packed during dinner hours. A 24-hour McDonald’s – a favorite hangout for residents around the area. Fancy singing the night away? No problem… The area even has its own hotels – two of them! Budget ones, yeah, but still, they are hotels. With all these shops at your fingertips, who would want to move...

They have spouses close friends, just like any other people. In the office, however…I’ve had managers who are scared of their own shadows. They can see when a suggestion is good. But they are scared that they would be blamed if anything goes wrong. So? When they hear a good suggestion, they squash it. I’ve also worked under managers who are power-crazy. These are worse, actually. They will do anything to gain a bit of credit… even if it means antagonizing every single employee under them. Then there are those “managers” who cannot make up their minds. One minute they tell you to go with Plan A; the next minute, they decide Plan B is better. Have you tried going for meetings where no decisions are made? But the meeting can end up taking three whole hours? Those are no fun, believe me. I’ve actually worked for one or two good managers. They know what they want, they act decisively, and they take care of the people under them. Sigh, I really miss them. I know this quote is a little overused, but I’d really like to borrow this to say to the “managers” out there: “With great power, comes great...
