Seen a lot of standing egg pictures on social media today? Bet you’re wondering what they are for, if you’re not Chinese. It’s Lap Chun today. In Chinese, that’s the start of spring. Today, eggs can be made to stand by themselves. Try it out for yourselves. Chinese believe that Lap Chun is the start of the lunar year. To us, this is the actual new year, not the first day of Chinese New Year. Most Chinese also believe that it is auspicious to bank in some money during Lap Chun. There are charts online to explain your “lucky” time slots, based on your Chinese horoscope animal. Depositing money into bank accounts is believed to make your money grow. If you’re going to try, then please wear clothes in colors that symbolizes good luck – red or yellow. Customs like these are treasured, especially now, when we find it so hard to keep traditions amidst the pandemic. This is the first year I’ve had to skip taking photographs of fireworks at New Year. Trying to make an egg stand during Lap Chun helps… a little. Here’s to hoping that the world will be free of Covid-19 soon. Happy...

The country is still in a semi-frozen mode. Covid 19 does not seem to be going away anytime soon. This year, most people have been stuck at home. There were no events, no chance of going out much with friends. As such, most of the country’s heroes have changed. Now, most of the heroes are all online. It’s near the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar again. Now that the MCO has been extended until the end of the year, there are still limited activities allowed. Because of this, there’s no atmosphere of the upcoming festivities in the shops and malls, unlike in previous years. Still, I managed to collect a set of boxes from my favorite mooncake provider, Foh San. The boxes show the new shoplot in Ipoh, albeit in the 1900s era. The mooncakes this year are also traditional in nature. Not many shops and providers came out with new flavours. They stuck to the old ones. But that’s okay – those are my favorites. Hopefully there’s enough here to last me until the day of the Mooncake Festival… Now it’s time to cut those mooncakes… bon...
